We stock vent covers in all the standard sizes. Before you can buy a cover you’ll need to know what size the vent opening is. Just use a tape measure to figure out your vent openings width and length. Wall and ceiling vents are usally one of these three sizes:
If your vent opening isn’t one of those three sizes then you probably need a custom-sized vent cover. These are typically more expensive then our standard sized covers and take around 6 weeks to make and ship. If that doesn’t sound like something that interests you there may be other options. For instance, if your vent opening is smaller than any of those sizes you can still use one of them to cover the opening. If you’re opening is 4″ x 12″ you can use a 6″ x 12″ to cover the opening. Just make sure you’re using an air return grille and not a full register cover. A flat cover can fit over any smaller opening but a register will only fit over an opening that is the same size.

Damper Box = Air Deflector
Hardware jargon gives me a headache. It’s tough explaining to customers that need a register cover that we call them floor registers. They are also called vent covers, heat registers and “stupid thing for that dumb hole in my floor that’s making the room chilly.” Only the last one is the official term.
“Damper box” is another confusing term. The damper box, also called an air deflector (or “open-shut thingamadoo”), is the part of the floor register that actually fits into the floor. It has louvers that open and close the same way venetian blinds do. If the louvers are open then air can flow out of the vent and through the floor register. If the louvers are closed then the floor register blocks all the air in the vent from entering the room. The register is “dampening” the flow of air into the room and so the louvers are called a “damper box.”
If you don’t need a damper box then you’ll want to buy a return air grille (”skinny register”).

You shouldn’t have to spend a lot of money on a wall vent cover. We offer wall vent covers that are inexpensive and good looking. The most important part of a “wall” vent cover is that it has mounting holes drilled into it so it can be mounted on the wall.
A wall vent is usually one of three sizes:

We base our vent cover sizes on the dimensions of the actual vent they’ll be covering. So if you have a 6″ x 10″ wall vent then you need a 6″ x 10″ vent cover. The actual vents are a little bit larger so they’ll overlap the vent. A 6″ x 10″ vent cover’s actual dimensions will be 7 1/4″ x 11 1/2″.
