How To Buy New Fireplace Doors, Step #1: What type of Fireplace do you have?
Buying new fireplace doors is very easy once you know what you need. The first item on the need-to-know checklist is what type of fireplace do you have, masonry or zero clearance?
Masonry fireplace doors are made of brick or stone and are used for wood burning fires. You can select fireplace doors that will overlap your the edge of your opening(overlap fit) or fit inside the opening so there is no overlap and the entire edge of the opening remains visible (inside fit).
Zero Clearance fireplaces are factory made metal boxes that work with gas burning fires. The edges of a zero clearance fireplace are very neat even, which makes for easy measuring and zero clearance fireplaces work great with subtle, minimalist fireplace doors.
This is very important: zero clearance fireplaces or masonry fireplaces that have been converted to use gas require fireplace doors that will allow the correct amount of airflow in and out of the fireplace. This is essential for safely operating your fire and prolonging the longevity of your fireplace.
Residential Retreat, Bosse, Portland Willamette and Diamond W all make masonry fireplace doors. Residential Retreat and Diamond W both have doors in stock that can ship within a few days.

Next time we’ll go over how to properly measure for your fireplace opening and what those measurements mean for the price and options of your new fireplace doors.
