How To Buy New Fireplace Doors, Step #2: How to Measure
If you’ve read our last article then you know if you have a masonry or a zero-clearance fireplace and what type of doors you’ll need to get.
So you know what type of door you’ll need but how big should they be? That’s the next step: measuring your fireplace opening so you know what size fireplace doors to order.
You’re measuring the height and the width of your fireplace opening. The bare fireplace opening. Don’t measure the current set of fireplace doors or anything else you have around your fireplace that you’ll be taking off. The bare fireplace opening is what you need to measure.
Your measurements should be as exact as possible. This is very important. If you think your fireplace is 40″ wide but it’s only 38″ then the door you order won’t fit. That’s a bad day. So take your time and measure carefully. “Measure twice, buy once, ” is a good motto to go by.
If your Masonry fireplace is uneven, give us the smallest measurement. If you have a masonry fireplace like the Ardmore (pictured) the brick or stone in your masonry fireplace may be uneven. So the height on the right side of your fireplace might be 28″ and the height on the left side could be 28 1/2″. If we make a door for the 28 1/2″ measurement, it won’t fit. If we make it for the 28″ measurement, it will fit and the overlap will cover up the 1/2″ discrepancy. Take measurements across your fireplace to make sure you have an accurate height and width. Remember, we need the smallest measurement so that the doors will fit.
So you’d want to take your measurements like this:
Measuring for a new fireplace door is simple as long as you take your time, be exact and make sure you get the smallest measurment for each dimension of the fireplace.
Once you know what type of door you’ll need and how big it should be the fun part begins and you can start picking out the style and finish of your new fireplace door. In our next article we’ll cover the different styles of doors and what will work best for you.
