How To Install A Handleset. Part One. Selecting The Right Tools
Whether you’re installing a handleset from Baldwin Hardware or one from the other manufacturers we carry at A Touch Of Brass like Emtek or Schlage, the key to a successful project is having the proper tools ready before you begin.
I’m going to use a two-piece sectional handleset as an example for this series. These are popular because they are so flexible. Most models can be installed with two locks, so you’ll find them used in situations where heavy security is required, often with steel doors. But sectionals can be used on any type door since the spacing between the top and bottom sections can be adjusted randomly. This is why people often use them when retrofitting antique doors. You can browse our full collection of sectional handlesets including dozens of styles that aren’t available at big box retailers here.
Here’s a list of the tools you should have on hand before you begin:
- Protective eyewear
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Tape measure
- Electric drill
- 2 1/8” diameter face bore hole saw
- 1/2” wood chisel
- 1/8” wood drill bit
- 5/16” wood drill bit
- 1” spade bit or 1” hole saw (recommended)
- Chalk, grease pencil or lipstick
- Pencil
- Utility knife
- Masking tape
- 24” level
- Hammer
- 5/32” wood drill bit
Also helpful:
- Wood filler
- Beeswax or soap
Next, I’ll share some tips on door preparation, the actual handleset installation and finally the best way to install the strikeplate.
